Monday 1 September 2008 The Welcome Party in the Spiegel Garden, Edinburgh
The Welcome Party for the 17th Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival will take place following one of the most memorable 'march pasts' in the history of Golden Oldies Rugby Festivals. Starting out on the magnificent Edinburgh Castle esplanade for welcome speeches, the groups will be led by a pipe band down The Royal Mile before turning down George IV Bridge, along Middle Meadow Walk and into the spectacular 'Spiegel Garden' in George Square.
Each year, for one month only, the Edinburgh University's beautiful George Square gardens are transformed into a weird and wonderful venue, packed with beer stands, cafes, BBQs and a whole caravan of circus tents. Pride of place is given to the Famous Spiegel Tent, a hand-sewn "tent-of-mirrors" dating from 1920 which once had Marlene Dietrich tread its boards, and it is supported by the smaller but no less impressive La Gayola pavilion. Every year the programme boasts an eclectic range of exotic theatre acts, from La Clique's burlesque circus show, to The Old Spice Boys' inimitable cabaret, via some glamorous quasi-punk from The Dresden Dolls.
The Spiegel Garden sits at the heart of Festival Fringe activity and will provide a stunning and unique venue along with an amazing party atmosphere to welcome Golden Oldies in a spectacular start to a week long festival. Prepare to be dazzled and entertained, leaving no doubt that you are a part of the one of the most memorable Golden Oldies Festivals so far!
Open exclusively to Golden Oldies teams, the Welcome Party will run for three hours with finger food and unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks throughout.
Wednesday 03 September. The Golden Oldies Highland Fling - A Day Out at Musselburgh Racecource.
Musselburgh Racecourse will play host to the mid week 'Highland Fling' on Wednesday 3 September 2008. A spectacular setting, on the east coast of Scotland and not far from Edinburgh, the Racecourse not only has a fantastic annual race calendar but also boasts the oldest 'links' golf course in Scotland.
Musselburgh's Racecourse was established in 1816 as a sporting venues for the very rich and the aristocracy - hence the name 'Sport of Kings' - to race their horses against one another. In 2008, during the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival, Musselburgh Racecourse will be the focal point for participants to experience a wee 'Taste of Scotland'. There will be four hours of unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks to stave off any potential dehydration; as well as an array of entertainment including crafts, whisky tasting, Highland Games activities, a ceilidh and various Scottish demonstrations including Highland Dancing.
Musselburgh Racecourse promises to provide a blend of warm Scottish hospitality, amongst a unique and picturesque setting, for an event to remember!
Sunday 07 September. The Final Dinner in the Highland Hall at Ingliston.
The Final Dinner, with up to 5500 people able to be seated, will be held in the Highland Hall at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, the home of the annual Royal Highland Show.
This last night of the Festival will be a grand affair with a wonderful three course dinner; beer, wine and soft drinks and music and dancing throughout. It is also the time for the Festival Awards and after a week of getting the hang of all things Scottish, tonight, there will be an opportunity for everyone to put on their dancing shoes, get on the dance floor - and learn how to 'Strip the Willow'. It will be a great end to a great week.
