Wellington proved an outstanding host for the week-long festivities with the three playing days hosted by three local rugby clubs - Petone, Western Suburbs and Poneke, under the overall organisation of the Wellington Rugby Union. Steve Dunbar and his team along with the three clubs proved outstanding hosts both on and off the field.
The week got off to a wet start which prevented the planned opening on the steps of the New Zealand Parliament but after a rousing opening ceremony at the alternative venue, the nearly 4,000 participants enjoyed a superb welcome party in the magnificent national museum of New Zealand - 'Te Papa'.
Many of the Golden Oldies also enjoyed a superb day at the "Great Golden Oldies Fun Day Out" at the Otaki Maori Racing Club and others took up the many sightseeing options in and around the city.
The Festival week concluded with a Gala Farewell Party in the biggest marquee ever erected in Wellington and the biggest ever function - on the new waterfront park, Waitangi Park. The Air New Zealand awards were presented by Cam Wallace, General Manager New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. See the awards images.
The local council staged their outstanding annual fireworks display on the harbour, to celebrate a truly memorable experience.
