Adelaide has a proud history in Hockey dating back to 1903 when the South Australian Hockey Association was formed, although the South Australia competition had been running since 1901.

In 1905 the Forestville Hockey Club was formed and is the oldest in Australia.

Adelaide Hockey Club in the Parklands playing area was formed in 1981 as an amalgamation of the Women's "Aroha" Hockey Club formed in 1906 and the Sturt Men's Hockey Club for in 1904.

In recent years the Adelaide City Council has recognised certain parts of the Parklands by calling them Aboriginal names from the Kaurna people who were the first tribes living there before European Settlement. The 2009 Festival will be held on the "Kurrangga" area which means 'blue gum place' and the Walyo Yerta area, Waylo meaning 'yam daisy' and Yerta meaning 'earth ground'.
